Downy & Hairy Woodpeckers

Both Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers have white backs and white under parts with white spotted black wings and black-and-white streaked faces.  Males have red on the nape; Females have no red.  Identify the Downy Woodpecker as the smaller of the two at only 6 and with a bill about half the length of the head.  The Hairy Woodpecker is 9 and has a bill almost as long as the head.  Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers can be found throughout the East stretching from Florida into Eastern Texas and into Northern Canada.  Both Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers will stop at feeders to eat Suet, Black Oil Sunflower, Striped Sunflower and Sunflower Hearts.
